Former Tasmanian sprintcar champion Adrian Redpath has broken the ice for his first win of the season in round two of the $70,000 Farmers Union Iced Coffee Sprintcar Series at Cranes Combined Carrick Speedway on Sunday night.

But the win didn’t come easily for Redpath, of Latrobe, and was only after a fascinating duel with reigning State champion Robin Dawkins, of Launceston, who qualified on pole position for the 30-lap final after two very strong wins in his heats.

Spreyton veteran Phill Coates started alongside Dawkins on the front row with Launceston’s Kurt Luttrell and Redpath on the second row.

Dawkins jumped away at the start to a handy lead, while Coates struggled for power with a poor start, allowing Redpath and Luttrell to go by.

Then Luttrell made a mistake and ran wide on turn four as Redpath blasted underneath to claim second and start the chase on Dawkins.

The State champ was setting a blistering pace in front and it was only after he slowed in lapped traffic Redpath was able to bridge the gap.

With 12 laps to go, Redpath seized his opportunity and found a way past Dawkins and the lapped traffic to take over the lead.

However, Dawkins repaid the favour six laps later only to clip the lapped car of rookie Steve Rowe, of Westbury, causing Rowe to roll and damaging Dawkins’ front end and also ending his night.

At the re-start, Redpath again blasted away from Luttrell to record a solid win over the next five laps.

Sprintcar rookie and former Formula 500 driver Kane Cruse, of Launceston, started well down the rid in the final, but drove consistently and avoided the dramas unfolding in front of him to work his way up to a sensational third place at the chequered flag in what was only his second race meeting in a sprintcar.
