Latrobe sprintcar driver Adrian Redpath scored his second consecutive victory at
Cranes Combined Carrick Speedway on Saturday night after a great tussle in the
final of the David Turner Memorial Sprintcar Race.
Former State champion Redpath qualified on grid four for the 30-lap final, which
was the main event on the Austune Autogas Stampede programme, after recording a
win and a fourth place in his two heats.
The race is named in memory of former sprintcar racer David Turner who was
killed in a trail bike accident in 1986,
Former two-times winner and reigning Tasmanian champion Robin Dawkins, of
Launceston, qualified on pole and led the race initially with Launceston’s Kurt
Luttrell and Jason Dawkins giving chase.
Luttrell forced his way underneath Robin Dawkins 10 laps into the journey.
A touch of wheels saw both drivers almost come unstuck as a spin back in the
pack at the same time forced another stoppage and Dawkins was put back in front
for the re-start.
Jason Dawkins was following Luttrell and his father closely at the time and was
forced to take evasive action, also spinning, with officials sending him to the
rear for the re-start
This elevated Redpath to third and within a few laps he managed to slip Luttrell
and started the chase on Dawkins.
Around half-race distance Redpath slotted past Dawkins, who appeared to be
struggling with car set-up, as Luttrell also passed him a few laps later to
claim second.
However, the State champion was not out of contention yet and was able to make
top wing angle hydraulic adjustments on the run from inside the cockpit and
bounced back late in the race, stealing second from Luttrell in the dying laps.
Redpath by now had opened up a winning gap and went on to score a solid victory
ahead of Dawkins and Luttrell, with Jason Dawkins making his way back up to
fourth in a spirited drive from the rear.
