Lee, a former Tasmanian
mini-sprint champion, qualified on pole position for the 25-lap final, in what
was also his maiden front-row start, joined on the outside by recently crowned
Tasmanian champion Jason Dawkins, of Launceston.
However, Lee started stronger and led Dawkins in the opening laps with
Launceston’s Kurt Luttrell and Jamie Bricknell next in line.
Luttrell tangled with a lapped car after seven laps as Lee managed to weave his
way through the traffic whilst holding the State champion at bay.
After being deemed the cause of the stoppage, Luttrell was sent to the rear for
the re-start, sporting some front wing damage from the incident.
Lee continued to withstand every Dawkins challenge in easily the best drive of
his career, until the State champion also clipped a lapped car and spun,
resulting in another stoppage.
With Dawkins this time sent to the rear, Lee was able to consolidate his lead
and score his long awaited maiden feature victory.
Bricknell closed the gap slightly in the final few laps to also record his best
result to date, while Luttrell and Dawkins managed to work their way back
through the field to finish third and fourth respectively.
